Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide recommends including a small amount - 30 to 45 mL (2 to 3 Tbsp) - of unsaturated fat each day. This can include a variety of Wafu® products that are low in saturated fat, contain no trans fats and are a source of Omega-3 polyunsaturates.
Not all fat is bad. The fact is, some fat is an essential part of the diet and is important for maintaining overall good health. Some fat gives you energy, helps the body absorb vitamins and helps your body grow and develop.
It’s simply a matter of ensuring that you eat the right type and the right amount of fat.
Canada’s Food Guide recommends adults get 20% to 35% of total daily calories from the right type of fat. Choose more mono – and polyunsaturated fats instead of saturated fats. The two types of polyunsaturated fat, which are essential in the diet, are Omega-3 polyunsaturated fat and Omega-6 polyunsaturated fat. Sources of Omega-3 fat include canola and flaxseed oil, walnuts and fatty fish (like salmon). Sources of Omega-6 fat include canola, soybean, corn and sunflower oils. Trans fats should be avoided as much as possible. Replacing saturated fat and trans fat with unsaturated fats has been shown to help lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Wafu® can be part of a balanced diet because it contains essential fats necessary for healthy living. A variety of Wafu® products are made with canola oil, are a source of essential Omega-3 and Omega-6 fat, and are low in saturated fat, low in cholesterol and contain no trans fat.
Use Nutrition Facts tables on food labels to choose products that contain less saturated and trans fats. They are your best guide when looking for healthy fats.
